Water Warriors off to a Strong Start

A lot of questions faced the 2015-16 Dayton Christian Swim Team upon entering their season.  How would they overcome the loss of 6 Seniors, will there be enough boys, who will score points, just to name a few.  The first practice in November saw the addition of 8 new swimmers to the team, and from there, all fears were put to rest.

Our weekend started with DC Diver, Kaley Pook, competing against 18 other, mostly Division 1 Divers, at the Centerville Dive Meet on Thursday at the Washington Rec Center.  With the experience of placing in the State meet last year, Kaley confidantly twisted and flipped her way to a FIRST PLACE finish!

The swimmers took to the pool Friday evening in Beavercreek at the Carroll Sprint Invitational.  The ten team field included powerhouse teams from Beavercreek, Bellbrook, Carroll, and CJ as well as league rival, Xenia Christian.  This was a non-scoring meet, but special recognition to the top 16 placers in each event.  With 8 kids swimming in their first high school swim meet, no one could gage how they would respond.  From the first dive off the block to the last finger tip on the touch pad, every DC swimmer in every race destroyed the standards set from time trials the week prior!  Nerves quicky faded as swimmer after swimmer performed their best times.  Highlights of the meet include Brooke Darkow finishing 1st in the 50 Free and 2nd in the 50 Butterfly, Kayla Landis finishing 4th in the 50 Free and 4th in the 50 Backstroke, and the 200 Free Relay A Team of Brooke, Betsy Lozan, Grace Cox, and Kayla finishing 3rd.  For the boys, Freshman Andrew Simmons finished 6th in the 50 Butterfly and 9th in the 100 IM, and the 200 Free & Medley A Relay Teams featuring Jameson Vaughan, Max Johnson, Ben Geiss, and Andrew finishing 8th in both events.

Saturday found your water warriors at Wright State University for the Waynesville Swimvitational.  This meet featured 16 teams, including traditionally strong teams from Oakwood, Valley View, and Waynesville.  A let down by the Warriors could be understandable, but again, your Warriors showed their mettle with personal best performances once again. With almost every swimmer scoring points for the team, the Boys finished in 7th Place while the Girls turned in an eye catching 3rd PLACE finish!  Highlights of the meet include BROOKE DARKOW finishing 1st in the 50 Butterfly and 1st in what was the most exciting race of the day, winning the the 50 Free by .03 seconds!  Other highlights include Kayla Landis with a 3rd Place finish in the 100 Backstroke, Kaley Pook with a 3rd Place finish in the 50 Breaststroke, 2nd Place finishes by both the 200 Free and Medley Relay teams, and a 3rd Place finish by the 200 Backstroke Relay team.  For the boys, the 200 Backstroke Relay team of Zachary Norvell, Brandon Dellinger, Ryan Chadwick, and Collin Costa finished in 3rd Place, while Ben Geiss finished 5th in the 100 Freestyle and Andrew Simmons finished 5th in the 100 Backstroke.

The team would like to thank all those who came out over the weekend to cheer them on and show your Purple Pride!  This week, Kaley will be diving Thursday evening, 7:30pm at the Washinton Township Rec Center in the Centerville Dive Meet. The swim team takes to the blocks Friday evening, 6:00pm at the Kettering Rec Center in the Fairmont Firebird Invitational and then again Saturday at 12 noon in Trotwood in the the Trotwood/Greenon Invitational.  The team would like to invite you to come out and cheer them on as they face some of the best teams in Southwest Ohio.
